If you want the short version: the best grocery store delis in America are the ones that slice your order to order instead of handing you a wrapped sandwich from a case. Publix, Trader Joe’s, Wegmans and H-E-B pull ahead on made-to-order quality, Whole Foods leads on ingredients and customization, and Kroger, Safeway, Giant Eagle, … Read more
The short answer to why you can’t find Boar’s Head at Walmart is that it was never a uniformly carried brand there. Refrigerated deli space gets allocated store by store, so what shows up depends on the store format, the distributor covering that region, and the wholesale terms in effect that month. For a hot sandwich, pick a moist, heat-tolerant meat: ham, roast beef, pastrami, mortadella or bologna all improve under a press or a toaster oven. For a cold sandwich, pick a firm, boldly seasoned meat: salami, capicola, prosciutto or soppressata keep their texture and flavor cold. The difference comes down to fat and moisture, not … Read more
A family of four eating deli meat for five packed lunches each needs about 40 to 60 slices, or roughly 1 to 1.5 pounds, for the whole week. That works out to 20 sandwiches and about 1 to 1.5 ounces of meat per person per lunch, which is a normal home-built sandwich rather than the … Read more

Short answer: usually no, not for the reason on the label. Uncured and nitrate-free lunch meats are preserved with plant-derived nitrate, usually from celery powder, which chemically does the same job as the synthetic sodium nitrite in conventional cured meat. Consumer Reports tested 31 packaged deli meats and found the uncured ones averaged essentially the … Read more
The best ham for sandwiches comes down to the flavor you actually want in the morning: Black Forest for real smoke, Virginia ham for a clean cured deli bite, honey ham for mild sweetness, and tavern ham for a firm, peppery melt.
